She takes a step back while I crane my neck and study the foyer. The house is decorated differently than it was in October, splashes of red, silver, and green adding accents here and there.

Royally lit, and brimming with guests, the interior of his house looks like any other place celebrating the Holiday Season.

“Follow me, please,” the woman says, smoothly pulling me away from the room where guests are gathered around a large dinning table.

We stroll across a corridor that takes us away from the dinner party and walk deep into the bowels of his mysterious house.

Dark chambers begin to line the hallway as we step into that part of the house where most of his guests never have access to.

Sure enough, I recognize the hallway leading to his office, a not so pleasant memory flickering in front of my eyes.

The image of that blonde woman leaning against him makes my stomach clench.

“Here,” the host says, showing me to one of the armchairs. “Mr. Arlington will be with you momentarily. He’s been delayed.”

I hurl her a questioning look and almost ask her, but her gaze makes me stop.

“What would you like to drink? Tea, coffee?” she offers.

“Tea is fine,” I say as I set my bag next to my chair.

She retreats smoothly while I stiffen in my seat.

“He’s been delayed?” I murmur quietly to myself. “Who has delayed him? And where is he coming from anyway?”

Spooked, I sway my gaze around, checking the walls for cameras and microphones. It dawns on me that I wouldn’t be to see them if they were planted in the room.

I better keep my mouth shut, I muse, when I hear clamor outside.

Curious, I push out of my seat and walk to the window.

Beautiful drapes line the glass and touch the floor, a soft light reflecting over the windowsill.

This is a different wing of the house, I figure, the noise seemingly traveling from the cars parked in front of his mansion.

Most of that area with the driveway is somewhat out of my line of sight, but I can still see them.

“They’re leaving,” I mutter to myself just as the antique clock on the wall announces the time.

It’s already midnight–– I realize, before I move my eyes back to the window. Men and women climb into their vehicles and smoothly pull away.

That’s interesting. The guests are leaving while the master of the house is on his way.

“Your tea, Miss.”

The woman’s voice makes me spin around, a feign smile on my face.

“Thank you so much,” I say, moving back to my seat, my gaze sliding to the cup of tea and the plate of finger sandwiches.

“You’ve come a long way. I thought you might want to have a bite.”

“Sure. Thank you.”

I sink in my chair while the woman takes a step back.

“I’ll be leaving shortly,” she says. “Do you need anything else?”

Leaving? Why?

Am I going to be the only person in the house when he arrives? Me
